Vercel AI SDK adds a Web Fetch Tool that works with any function-calling model.

In one minute

Vercel’s AI SDK documentation now lists an experimental Web Fetch Tool for agents and applications.

What changed: Same event as Vercel releases @ai-sdk/tool-web-fetch 1.0, a first-party web fetch tool for any tool-calling model in the AI SDK

experimental_createWebFetchTool lets an agent read web pages and documents by URL and can be passed to generateText alongside other tools.

The tool is distributed as @ai-sdk/tool-web-fetch; the documented installation command is pnpm add ai @ai-sdk/tool-web-fetch. The example uses a model configured for function calling, a webFetch tool instance, and a five-step limit while asking the model to summarize a URL. The SDK says its first-party tools work with any model that supports function calling. Node.js 22.13 or newer is required.

The source labels the API experimental. It does not state which AI SDK version introduced it, a release date, pricing, service-level guarantees, or which websites and document formats will work in practice.
