Pinecone released VQ-bench, an open-source library of vector quantization primitives that compose into pipelines, alongside a paper for VecDB@VLDB 2026. It benchmarked 14 popular quantizers on recall, reconstruction error, and encode time. PQ and OPQ had the lowest reconstruction error, and EDEN matched E-RaBitQ on recall while encoding much faster.

For retrieval engineers, composable primitives mean a new quantizer can be built by swapping one step and evaluated exactly like existing methods. Pinecone calls this a first iteration, and the post does not report results under latency constraints or shifting workloads.
