OpenAI has introduced Locked chats in ChatGPT. Users can remove selected conversations from regular history, pinned chats, and conversation search; the chats appear in a separate project. Access requires a four-digit PIN, with device authentication such as Face ID available on iOS and Android. The feature is intended to prevent casual viewing, not to provide end-to-end encryption. It does not change model-training settings, conversation retention, or OpenAI’s legal obligations. Resetting the PIN deletes locked chats and files uploaded to the project, with no recovery. OpenAI says rollout is gradual and availability includes free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts. Voice mode works with locked chats on mobile, but Codex conversations cannot be locked.
