Zed released stable version 1.22.0. The editor adds an optional model parameter to spawn_agent, allowing a newly created subagent to use a model other than the configured subagent model or its parent agent’s model. Zed also displays the active model on the subagent card and enables compaction for subagents.

The release adds bring-your-own-key support for GPT-6.1 Sol through an OpenAI API key. It adds Grok 4.7 to the SuperGrok and xAI providers and marks it as their recommended default. Zed now fetches the OpenCode Zen and Go model list dynamically rather than relying on a bundled list; deprecated OpenCode models are hidden. A unified/split toggle was also added for diffs opened with zed --diff <old> <new>.

The release notes list these changes but do not establish their cost, availability under individual provider plans, model quality, or the effect of subagent compaction on task completion. They also do not provide benchmark results for the new model-selection flow.
