UK launches AI Biosecurity Lab with £100M public funding and up to £200M in OpenAI and Anthropic model credits

In one minute

On 24 October 2026, the UK Cabinet Office announced the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), an independent non-profit established under a National AI Biosecurity Initiative.

What changed: The UK is launching an AI Biosecurity Lab with up to £300 million in government funding and company commitments, a separate initiative from the prior biological-data commitment.

The government says it will provide £100 million in funding and describes AIBL as a dedicated organisation for AI-enabled biosecurity.

OpenAI has committed £100 million in compute and model credits, plus trusted access to relevant capable models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic has committed up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access, and technical support. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research will participate in research collaborations and AI-for-science work.

Initial work is intended to improve early detection of biological threats and accelerate vaccines, treatments, and other countermeasures. The lab is expected to work with UKHSA, APHA, Dstl, MHRA, academic institutions, and industry. The announcement does not establish a launch date for specific capabilities, public availability of any models or credits, evaluation results, or the terms governing access to the participating companies' systems.
