Streaming comes to API Gateway: real-time and AI-ready APIs, without changing your spec

In one minute

Google announced Public Preview support for streaming in API Gateway on October 22, 2026.

What changed: Google API Gateway adds public-preview support for streaming APIs, including SSE, bidirectional traffic, and streamed model responses.

The gateway can now proxy Server-Sent Events, WebSockets, chunked HTTP responses, and server-side or bidirectional gRPC streams. Connections can remain open for up to one hour.

Streaming is enabled when a gateway is created with the --enable-streaming flag. Google says existing API specifications need no streaming-specific extensions or annotations, and existing controls remain available, including API keys, JWT validation, service-account authentication to backends, Cloud Logging, and Cloud Monitoring. The release also adds deterministic default hostnames in the form GATEWAY_ID-PROJECT_NUMBER.REGION.gateway.dev.

Google says API Gateway model routing can stream responses from Gemini, Claude, and OpenAI gpt-oss models in Gemini platform. During Preview, streaming must be opted into at gateway creation; Google plans to make it the default behavior at general availability. The announcement does not establish a GA date, pricing, regional availability, throughput, or performance characteristics.
