Starting today, staff at Sweden's Government Offices , which run the prime minister's office and the ministries, can't open ChatGPT or Claude on work computers.

In one minute

Sweden’s Government Offices, the administrative body supporting the prime minister and cabinet, will block ChatGPT and Claude on staff work computers from October 26.

What changed: Sweden’s Government Offices will block ChatGPT and Claude on staff computers from Oct. 26, while retaining reviewed Microsoft Copilot; no prior document covers this action.

Microsoft Copilot will remain the only approved AI tool, according to Decrypt’s report citing Sveriges Radio.

Mikael Wettercrantz, the Government Offices’ director of digitalisation, said that use of AI services without a formal contract can create information-security consequences. The report says Copilot was reviewed by the Government Offices and received stricter security settings after that review; ChatGPT and Claude did not receive the same approval.

The restriction is not described as a universal prohibition on access to the two services. Some employees can still use them through an internal AI platform, although the number of users and applicable controls were not disclosed. The report does not establish the technical mechanism of the block, the terms of the internal access route, or whether Claude models are enabled in the Government Offices’ Copilot instance.
