r/opensource banned anything made with AI : projects that use AI or are built for it are out too, even though Linus Torvalds used Claude Code on a Linux patch this month.

In one minute

The moderators of r/opensource have announced rules excluding projects that use AI, were made with AI, or are intended for AI.

What changed: The subreddit’s moderators have now announced rules excluding AI-made, AI-using and AI-oriented projects, including human-written MCPs.

Gizmodo reported the announcement on October 25, 2026, citing a post by moderator Wolvereness.

The stated rules bar projects that make “obvious” use of AI and also exclude AI-adjacent work, including human-written Model Context Protocol (MCP) projects. The announcement says the restriction applies regardless of how many tokens were used to make a project. It also introduced unrelated restrictions on projects and Reddit accounts less than one year old, and on posts from users who do not speak English.

The policy concerns submissions to one subreddit, not the legal or technical status of open-source projects. The source does not establish how consistently moderators will enforce the AI criteria, how they will determine whether a project used AI, or whether other open-source communities will adopt similar rules.
