The announcement, published October 26, 2026, says users can upload an .md file to Drive, open it in Docs, and edit it without converting the file to another format.
Docs shows a visible .md badge for native Markdown documents. Google says collaborators can co-edit these files in real time, use line-level comments and suggestions, and retain tracked version history. Drive can render formatted Markdown previews, including tables and hyperlinks, and lets users switch to raw-text viewing.
The feature is available now to anyone with a Google account or a Google Workspace account. Google positions the change for documentation shared among developers, repositories, and AI tools, while preserving the underlying Markdown file.
The source does not establish Git provider integration, agent permissions or automation behavior, supported Markdown dialects, file-size limits, or whether all Docs features preserve every Markdown construct on export.
