Origin Range Requests: Serving large files without range-request tuning

In one minute

Cloudflare has described Origin Range Requests, a cache change intended to handle byte-range requests for large files without requiring origin-side range-request tuning.

What changed: Cloudflare’s new Origin Range Requests release adds coordinated partial origin fetches in Pingora and reports halved Cloudflare R2 p99 latency.

The company says naive byte-range caching can cause small requests to consume gigabytes of origin bandwidth. Its implementation rebuilds part of the cache architecture in Pingora so partial fetches can be coordinated automatically. Cloudflare says the change cut R2 p99 latency in half.

The source presents this as a Cloudflare engineering result, not a general benchmark. It does not state which plans or products expose the capability, whether customers need to enable it, its price, the test workload behind the p99 figure, or whether the result applies beyond R2.
