That fact should not be inflated into proof that OpenAI abandoned ethics work. The company's position is that ethical considerations are distributed across research and model-building teams rather than owned by one person. The unanswered organizational question is whether a distributed responsibility has clear authority, escalation paths, and independent review.
For systems becoming more autonomous, responsibility design is part of runtime governance. A named role is not sufficient, but removing it increases the need for visible decision rights and audit mechanisms elsewhere. The useful follow-up is evidence about who can stop a release or challenge a model decision, not speculation about one departure.
