Obsidian 1.15.0 replaces Mermaid.js with its new open-source Pele library for rendering diagrams

In one minute

Obsidian has released Desktop 1.15.0 in its Catalyst early-access channel, dated October 22, 2026.

What changed: Obsidian 1.15.0 integrates Pele, adding Mermaid 12.1 syntax support, faster theme-matched responsive diagrams, zoom and pan, and automatic rendering without a confirmation prompt.

The release replaces Mermaid diagram rendering with Pele, Obsidian’s open-source, zero-dependency Mermaid-to-SVG library. Pele is compatible with Mermaid 12.1.0 syntax.

Obsidian says diagrams now render faster, inherit the active theme’s colors and fonts, respond to note width, and can be zoomed and panned when scaled down. Because Pele cannot run code, diagrams are displayed without a confirmation prompt. The “Show Mermaid diagrams in notes” setting has been removed.

The change also affects plugin and theme developers. Obsidian no longer ships Mermaid; loadMermaid() and window.mermaid now render through Pele while retaining listed initialization, rendering, parsing, and configuration calls. SVG output uses .pele-* classes, new --mermaid-* CSS variables are available, and new code can use window.pele after loadMermaid() resolves. The changelog does not provide benchmark figures, migration guidance for third-party Mermaid integrations, or a public-release date beyond the early-access build.
