Meta says it removed access to more than 750,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts in Australia that it assessed as belonging to people under 16 by June 30, 2026. That total includes more than 500,000 accounts removed before the law took effect and continued enforcement afterward.
The company describes age assurance as a continuing inference process. Its controls include AI analysis of posts, comments, bios, and captions for age clues; AI-assisted review of community reports; easier parental reporting; and detection intended to prevent a removed user from registering again.
This is concrete AI governance, not a generic compliance announcement. The system makes consequential decisions from probabilistic profile evidence, so error rates, appeals, privacy, and consistency across platforms matter. Meta argues for a single operating-system or app-store age signal, which would move the trust boundary away from every individual social service.
