Donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation \ Anthropic

In one minute

Anthropic said on October 22, 2026 that it is donating the Agent Skills open standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a Linux Foundation project it co-founded with Block and OpenAI.

What changed: Anthropic now donates Agent Skills to the AAIF, detailing governance, maintainers, adoption figures, and a proposed roadmap.

The transfer includes the Agent Skills name and logo, its GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain.

Agent Skills defines a skill as a folder containing a SKILL.md file plus optional scripts and reference material for a task or domain. Anthropic says more than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code, have integrated the standard. It also reports more than 1 million published skills and nearly 280 million installations.

The company says users and contributors will not need to join AAIF. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals; David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag are named Lead Maintainers. Anthropic has proposed versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance as initial roadmap items.

The announcement does not establish how those proposals will be adopted, whether implementations will behave consistently across platforms, or how security guidance will be enforced.
