Anthropic released Claude Code v2.1.311. The release changes the failure behavior for standard-context sessions that run past 200K tokens: rather than stopping with a “Usage credits required for 1M context” message, Claude Code now compacts the conversation and continues.
The version also fixes long freezes at startup and after reading or editing files when a CLAUDE.md file contains a very long list item. Other fixes cover Write and Edit stalls on changes involving thousands of lines, MCP tools unavailable to subagents when a server connects late, and stale MEMORY.md or CLAUDE.md content after automatic compaction.
Additional fixes address background agents, isolated worktrees, transcript ordering in CLI and SDK sessions, and several Remote Control and Cowork cloud-session failures. The release notes do not provide benchmark results, quantify a general startup-speed improvement, or establish a new maximum usable context length.
