Atlassian has published its 2026 State of Developer Experience Report, based on a survey of more than 1,500 software practitioners.

What changed: Atlassian’s 2026 developer-experience survey adds findings that AI speeds work for 87% but only 28% feel less friction, alongside bottlenecks and limited organizational AI strategy.

The report says 87% of developers believe AI helps them ship work faster, and 80% say it lets them deliver more without working longer hours.

The reported gains do not translate into broadly lower workflow friction. Only 28% of developers say they experience noticeably less day-to-day friction than before AI. Forty-nine percent report spending four or more hours a week reviewing AI output, correcting prompts, and doing related work. Seventy-five percent say they have more responsibility for validating the quality and safety of AI-generated output.

The report also finds that 17% of developers and 23% of leaders say their organization has a clearly communicated and actively implemented AI strategy across the software development lifecycle. It does not establish measured productivity changes, causal effects of AI adoption, or whether the surveyed group represents all software organizations.
