Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund to address AI job disruption

In one minute

CNBC reports that Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval.

What changed: Same event as Anthropic announced on Saturday that it is committing 5% of its shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund , subject to stockholder approval.

The fund would be a wholly owned limited liability company rather than a tax-exempt nonprofit.

Anthropic said its board could add 2 percentage points of equity for each 50% increase in the company’s value above a baseline that has not been disclosed. The company said the fund could make large nonprofit donations, direct distributions to specified populations, or support programs studying and addressing AI-related worker displacement. It also said equity held by the LLC would not be used for lobbying or political giving.

The announcement builds on Anthropic’s previously stated $200 million commitment to study AI’s effects. CNBC reports that Anthropic will provide further details on governance, structure, valuation milestones, and progress in coming months. The announcement does not establish that shareholders have approved the plan, what the valuation baseline is, who will govern the fund, or which recipients and programs will receive money.
