The organization recommends restricting ChatGPT to adults until identified gaps are fixed.
Its assessment reports that new parent-linked accounts received no alerts during tested conversations about self-harm and disordered eating. The Institute says the system missed more than one in four warranted crisis referrals, study mode could be circumvented, and adult-registered test accounts did not switch to the under-18 experience during repeated testing. It also found that some protections, including refusal of sexual roleplay, worked.
These are findings from Common Sense Media’s assessment, not an independently replicated evaluation. The Institute calls for third-party testing before ChatGPT is again marketed to teens.
