The publication also introduces StudentSimEval, a protocol covering 60 students across chess, second-language English writing, and mathematics. It measures behavioral fidelity and responsiveness to tutor guidance, with methods fitted and evaluated on the same records. Across all three domains, StudentSim outperformed GPT-5.4 on both metrics. In chess, it scored 0.51 for fidelity and 0.91 for responsiveness, versus GPT-5.4 at 0.23 and 0.72. As a proof of concept, the team used StudentSim as a reward model for tutor reinforcement learning; expert human raters preferred that tutor to a no-RL baseline and a tutor trained against a GPT-5.4 simulator reward. The publication describes this as a proof of concept, not evidence of improved outcomes among real students. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/studentsim-training-llm-based-student-simulators

Microsoft Research introduced StudentSim, a framework for training individualized LLM-based student simulators from sparse per-student data through pooled training followed by per-student specialization.
