The model places Pinecone’s data plane—including vectors, documents, metadata, and request payloads—inside the customer’s chosen cloud account and region, while Pinecone operates the managed service through its control plane. Pinecone says its control plane does not store or process customer content or request payloads; only anonymized operational metrics and traces are shared for monitoring and support.
The company describes BYOC as a zero-access operating model: it says management does not require SSH, VPN, inbound network access, or a standing cross-account IAM role. Upgrades, scaling, and maintenance are retrieved through an outbound call from Pinecone’s control plane and executed locally. Pinecone also says the same APIs, SDKs, and control-plane workflows are available across BYOC and its standard service.
