OpenAI’s plugin documentation describes MCP extensions that connect plugins to several ChatGPT surfaces: the global sidebar, conversation panels, settings, file viewers and editors, and the desktop composer.

The reference also lists deep links, bidirectional model-app context sharing, rich forms, and onboarding. OpenAI says extensions can be declared with a few lines of SDK code and links TypeScript and Python SDKs plus a protocol specification. The documentation notes that web extensions are coming soon to ChatGPT Free and Go users, composer mentions are desktop-only, and existing plugin functionality is unaffected.
