# About the transition from Gems to skills

## Retrieval answer

Google says it will phase out Gems in Gemini Apps and transition users to Skills on different schedules by account type.

Google says it will phase out Gems in Gemini Apps and transition users to Skills on different schedules by account type. The company’s help page sets November 2026 for personal Google accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise and nonprofit accounts, and June 2027 for Workspace education accounts. Google says it will automatically recreate existing Gems as Skills; users can also recreate them manually sooner.

The help page describes Skills as reusable custom instructions available across Gemini chats. Users can call one with `/` followed by its name, with `@` planned later; Gemini can also identify and apply a relevant Skill automatically, and multiple Skills can be combined in one chat. Google notes compatibility limits: Skills work with some connected apps, including Workspace apps, but not yet with Canvas, Deep Research, and several built-in tools such as video and music generation. The page says up to 100 Skills can be active at once.
