The company is using GenoMorph in its dodo project, for which it says it has one genome, versus roughly 100 genomes available for its woolly mammoth work. GenoMorph combines comparative genomics, developmental biology, and 3D morphology. Colossal said it trained the system with developmental data from chickens, quail, ducks, and pigeons, plus genetic information and 3D skull measurements from more than 70 bird species.

According to CEO Ben Lamm, the platform has identified about 2,300 potential DNA-editing targets related to dodo cranial and facial morphology. Colossal also said its Nicobar pigeon colony has reached 36 birds and that it has produced cells that develop into eggs and sperm. The company says the candidate edits are now to be tested in the lab; the report does not establish that any target produces dodo traits, is safe in an animal, or that a dodo-like bird will be hatched.
