Colossal Biosciences has announced GenoMorph, an AI tool intended to identify genetic targets for its dodo reconstruction work. The company says the system was trained on developmental data from quails, ducks, chickens, and pigeons.

According to Colossal, GenoMorph has identified 2,300 DNA targets associated with the dodo’s beak and facial structure. The company describes the tool as a way to distinguish genetic features central to the dodo’s appearance from natural variation, narrowing the set of edits it considers relevant.

Colossal says it has assembled one high-quality dodo genome, compared with 104 high-quality woolly mammoth genomes. It attributes the gap to rapid DNA degradation in Mauritius’s hot, wet climate.

The announcement does not provide an independent validation of the 2,300 targets, a public model or dataset, experimental editing results, or evidence that the identified targets are sufficient to reconstruct a dodo.
