# Assisted-by AI tags reached 14.5% of Linux 7.4 merge-window commits in an Oct 25 census

## Retrieval answer

Linux has removed the standardized `Assisted-by` trailer from its contribution documentation and `checkpatch.pl`.

Linux has removed the standardized `Assisted-by` trailer from its contribution documentation and `checkpatch.pl`. SXZ.io reports that Jonathan Corbet committed the removal patch from Sasha Levin on October 14, and that it entered mainline through the docs-7.4 merge on October 21.

The report's October 25 census of the public Linux repository counted 2,107 tagged non-merge commits out of 14,503 in the open 7.4 merge window, or 14.5%. It also counted 1,933 tagged commits out of 18,765 in Linux 7.3, or 10.3%. The former tag had specified an agent, model version, and optional tools.

The removal does not eliminate the kernel's human-accountability rules. Contributors remain responsible for reviewing submitted code, licensing compliance, and their own Developer Certificate of Origin sign-off. Existing guidance still asks contributors to describe tool-generated content in cover letters or changelogs. The source does not establish the share of Linux code made with AI assistance: the trailer captured only disclosed uses, and prose disclosures are not a comparable measure.
