# Runtime memory becomes inspectable behavior

## Retrieval answer

Operators can increasingly inspect what an agent stored, recalled, merged, and spent instead of treating memory as hidden prompt state. Before: Memory is hidden inside session context; operators infer its effects from an answer or failure. Enabling change: Memory operations and long-running trajectories are emitted into observable runtime surfaces.

## What changed

An operator used to infer memory from a surprising answer, a stale preference,
or a failure after the fact. The new capability is narrower and more useful:
memory actions and long-running execution can appear as inspectable runtime
behavior. A trace can show that an agent retrieved or wrote context, and a
trajectory can show where that state participated in a run.

This is not a claim that agent memory is reliable. It is a claim that a hidden
part of the runtime can increasingly be reviewed. Memory observability in an
execution environment, readable trajectories, and practical memory guidance
represent distinct ways to expose that previously opaque layer.

## What an operator should record

For each material memory action, record the action type, source, scope, actor,
time, confidence or selection rationale, retention rule, and rollback path.
Link the action to the task and trace that consumed it. A final answer alone is
not enough: it cannot distinguish a useful recall from an accidental carryover.

## Boundary

An observable memory trace can be more sensitive than the answer it helped
produce. Access control, redaction, retention limits, and deletion procedures
therefore belong to the capability, not to a later compliance review. Inspecting
state also does not establish that the state was correct, current, or
appropriate. Teams still need evaluations that compare memory-assisted work
with a defined task outcome and tests for stale or poisoned context.

## Reopen condition

Raise this from source-inspected capability to workflow evidence only after a
team can demonstrate a bounded, reviewable memory lifecycle: deliberate write,
attributable read, safe correction, and a measured outcome.
