On about Sept. 7, 2026, The Information reported that Anthropic had signed compute deals worth "up to" $517bn in the 11 months since October 2025. Secondary coverage described at least 14.8 GW of new capacity on top of the 1-2 GW Anthropic already had. The article is paywalled, so its deal-by-deal breakdown cannot be checked directly. The newsroom's question was whether the headline number is mostly optional, multi-year capacity or something closer to a fixed bill.

That question matters to anyone building on Claude. Fixed obligations of this size shape Anthropic's pricing, its capacity, and how many hardware platforms it runs on. They also tie Anthropic's financial health to Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Broadcom and SpaceX/xAI. Three weeks after The Information's story, Reuters reported on Anthropic's confidential draft S-1, which disclosed a nearly identical figure along with something the original story apparently lacked: how much of it is binding.

## What we checked

- **Does the reported $517bn reflect multi-year, conditional compute commitments rather than unconditional spending comparable to Anthropic's revenue?** partly confirmed. The multi-year part holds. Reported terms run seven to 10 years, Amazon's alone spans about a decade, and the money cannot be compared with a single year of revenue (2025 revenue was nearly $4.6bn). The 'conditional' part is largely refuted: Reuters reports that about 80% of the at-least-$518bn is non-cancellable or payable regardless of usage. Google, Amazon and Microsoft commitments are described as payable regardless of usage, and the Broadcom leases as largely non-cancellable. [3][4][7][2]
- **(Added) Are The Information's 'up to $517bn' and Reuters' prospectus-based 'at least $518bn' the same set of obligations?** unresolved. The two figures are almost identical, but they are framed in opposite ways ('up to' versus 'at least'). The Information's breakdown is behind a paywall, and the later Akamai deal ($11.6bn, signed Sept. 18) may or may not be counted in either total. Any overlap between the Google cloud obligations and the Broadcom TPU leases has not been publicly reconciled. [1][4][6]
- **(Added) Is the part of the total that is truly optional concentrated in specific contracts?** confirmed. According to Reuters as summarised by TrendForce, the xAI/SpaceX commitment (up to $84.5bn through 2029) is the one that is largely cancellable on 90 days' notice. Akamai's $11.6bn contract depends on Akamai meeting delivery and availability requirements, and includes an optional expansion of up to about $9bn. [3][6]

## What we found

- The Information's article is paywalled. The Decoder's account of it describes the $517bn as a ceiling ('up to') and the 14.8 GW as a floor ('at least'). Many of the contracts run past 2030, and neither Anthropic nor OpenAI can yet pay for such commitments out of revenue. The Decoder does not list the individual deals. [1][2]
- Reuters reviewed Anthropic's confidential IPO prospectus. As relayed by TrendForce and CloudComputing News, it shows at least $518bn of infrastructure spending over about a decade with six partners, and about 80% of that is non-cancellable or payable regardless of usage. The reported pieces are Google at least $111.1bn, Amazon at least $110bn and Microsoft at least $31.4bn, all over seven to 10 years. Broadcom-related equipment leases add about $161.2bn, which Reuters calls largely non-cancellable. [3][4]
- The xAI/SpaceX deal is the clearly optional part. TrendForce, citing Reuters, puts it at up to $84.5bn for Nvidia-based capacity through 2029, largely cancellable on 90 days' notice. TrendForce also mentions more than $20bn of AMD capacity. It is not clear how that fits into the six-partner total. [3]
- Anthropic's own April 6, 2026 announcement of the Google/Broadcom deal says 'multiple gigawatts' of next-generation TPU capacity, coming online from 2027. It gives no dollar value, calls Amazon its primary cloud and training partner, and lists run-rate revenue above $30bn. As summarised by CloudComputing News, the April 2026 Amazon deal involves more than $100bn over 10 years and up to 5 GW, and the November 2025 Azure deal a $30bn compute commitment. [5][4]
- Akamai's 8-K shows what a binding Anthropic compute contract looks like in practice. Anthropic committed to pay about $11.6bn under two Project Plans signed Sept. 18, 2026, each with a seven-year term. Payment depends on Akamai meeting delivery and service-availability requirements, and Anthropic can terminate after a material outage. Additional $3bn commitments unlock tranches of a warrant on Akamai stock. [6]
- Anthropic's revenue is small next to the obligations. PYMNTS, citing Reuters, reports 2025 revenue of nearly $4.6bn, an operating loss above $8bn and a net loss of $42bn. The prospectus also warns that many large customers have not signed long-term contracts. [7]

## What it means

Don't treat the roughly $518bn as soft options. If Reuters' read of the draft S-1 is right, around four-fifths of it is take-or-pay or non-cancellable, spread over about a decade with Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Broadcom. The flexible part is mostly the SpaceX/xAI capacity, which either side can exit on 90 days' notice. That has practical consequences. Anthropic's capacity rests mainly on Trainium, TPU and Nvidia/Azure supply locked in for years, which should ease the capacity crunches that hurt Claude reliability in 2026. Capacity running on Colossus could disappear at short notice. Anthropic also has strong financial reasons to keep usage high on every platform, so expect continued multi-cloud distribution (Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry) and aggressive commercial pushes.

The risk sits on the other side. Fixed costs this large, against 2025 revenue of about $4.6bn, raise the stakes if demand or prices disappoint. If you depend heavily on Claude, keep a fallback model provider, prefer cloud-marketplace contracts that move with your existing cloud commitments, and watch the public S-1 for the final figures. Wherever you cite this number, call it 'about $518bn, roughly 80% binding, over about 10 years', not '$517bn of deals'.

## Still open

- Will the public S-1 confirm the $518bn total, the roughly 80% binding share and the partner amounts, or revise them?
- Do the Google cloud obligations ($111.1bn) and the Broadcom TPU leases ($161.2bn) overlap, and how much is TPU capacity delivered from 2027?
- Are the Akamai deal ($11.6bn, signed after the prospectus was drafted) and the AMD capacity counted in either the $517bn or the $518bn figure?
- What are the yearly payment schedules? How much falls due before 2029 compared with later?
